I just found you and your life is like listening to me tell stories of my own. I am a real estate agent and full time student, and the kids go to daycare 2 days a week (except in July, daycare is closed. HELP ME!), but the rest of the time I work from home with them. My son will be 3 this month, but your grocery store story really hit home.

Just the other day I was in a local store and the fit throwing commenced. Some old guy comes tearing across the store to tell me that I need to learn to control my kid and that I should just take him out of the store RIGHT NOW, because that would teach him a lesson. Here I am, crazy haired, trying to deal with my 3 year old while my 1 year old is copying his screaming, and I just looked up and said "What lesson, that if he throws a fit he wins and we will leave the store????" I got a really nasty look and he stormed off. But I was mortified.

Sometimes bribery works. I wlil keep a sucker or something similar in my purse, and I let my son see that it is there before we enter the store, saying "If you are a good boy through the whole store, you can have this when we are all done". Sometimes I might have to give him the occassional gentle reminder, but otherwise he is pretty good.

I'm anxious to keep reading your posts - I really can relate.

I LOVE that you have this blog! I was feeling so alone and frustrated with my son! We belong to a playgroup and it was he** becasue all of the other moms can calm their kids down or redirect them and I am no able to do that as easily with my son. It is so nice to know that their are other kids out there with the same problem. I would love to be able to chat with you about som of the things I have going on and swap some ideas on how to handle different situations. Thanks so much!

Have you heard of Sensory Integration Disorder?
Many professional have not been trained in this,
even pediatricians, therapist or o.t.'s.
However, if you can get an eval from an O.T.
(Occupational Therapist) who has been trained in this - the earlier in toddlerhood, the better,
you may find that SOME of a spirited child's behavior
may have Sensory Integration issues, such as feet not touching the ground, or getting super upset at the sparkles from Easter Eggs on hands etc.
Check out from the library the Out-of-Sync Child
to see if at least SOME of her behaviors can be helped at the root neurological cause.
She may have tactile hypersensitivty.
I am just learning about this b/c i have my own
17 month spirited toddler and while i believe
we cannot change tempermant perhaps there are aspects of behavior that can be improved upon
for the child's sake and our sanity.
I hope this helps in some way.

Would love to hear more about how that goes for you! We've been exploring methods of dealing with our spirited two year old and that's one option we've considered.

My girlfriend gave the gluten free diet a shot for her five year old boy who was getting more and more out of control and the effect was almost instant. He calmed down, listened better, and became more pleasant to be around. Sounds promising!

So I'm wondering how the gluten-free diet has been going? My 19 month old is umm, I guess we could call him highly-spirited. He is in traditional daycare and is hitting, biting, sitting on his friends, screaming, not sleeping. He just started in March, but is recently very difficult for them to deal with. We are exploring other child care options but really want to explore the root of his behavior. He is also very tiny. Not on the chart yet for weight and about 15% or height. He was an extremely colicky baby. Someone suggested gluten-free, so we're exploring that. Thanks.

you need to get the book, nurturing your child's sixth sense. it talks about all that stuff. also a book (loosely titled here) your child's past life.
read them, you obviously understand that kind of stuff, and it will help. keep in touch with me, I'll do what I can. I have a six month old, but have lots of background in child development. take care, miye
